He was born in June 1961, and died prematurely in July 1996. Peter is loved and remembered. But what wonderful memories we have of his childhood, his teen years, and early manhood.
It was 1967 that the family went to Ireland and here is a wonderful photo of Peter at age six. He had so many cute expressions that we still use “Let me choose my pick.” That was one of our favourites.
He thought his great uncle Alex was the greatest. He loved watching him push his car into the garage at night to save gas. And to turn off the engine when we went down a hill, again to save gas. Peter pulled me outside when we were staying at Alex's home in Belfast, to show me how his uncle had hung pipes around the house which were designed to serve as a kind of alarm system if anyone was prowling around.
In the photo with his grandparents and Mary and Kelly, Peter is seen at age 18. Kelly would be 15. What memories there are of Mary’s dad playing badminton with Peter at the cottage. Our favourite family sport, organized by Peter, was croquet.
Mary's Aunt Helen was close to Peter and on her birthday, Peter took her to the theatre to see Sunset Blvd. They went out for dinner and were picked up by a Rolls Royce limo.
Peter loved the cottage. As he grew older, we always picked up a bottle of Mouton Cadet, and loved walking around the grounds with a glass of wine in our hands. Washing and shining our old yellow inboard motor boat was his favourite pastime.
In 1983 on my 50th birthday, the staff at CFIB gave me a 50-year-old bottle of red wine. And to celebrate the occasion, Peter cooked a special six-course meal.
And, will we ever forget Xmas time with Peter, with all of us dressed in our finery. Peter is seen with Kelly in a photo from Green Valley dressed naturally in his tuxedo.
No parent that loses a child ever forgets the pain. We think of our Peter with love every day.
