The first photo is of great-grandfather Bulloch as a university student. He was fine featured and tall and lean in build. His father and his two brothers, James and Alexander were in the linen business and later in real estate.
Now we have a priceless photo of our great-grandmother Barbara Bulloch, formerly Barbara Clark on the left with her sister Elizabeth Clark who became Elizabeth Hogg. I think they cut a mattress in half to make those two hats. Their father was a famous surgeon in the late 1800s. Very big on bloodletting.
Our grandfather Bulloch is shown in this photo at age 17. He was apprenticed as a linen weaver (whatever that means), and had several medals. He did not marry our grandmother Bulloch until he was over 40 and the marriage was arranged by the two most powerful and wealthy families of Belfast in 1907, the Bullochs and the Devons.
Everyone has heard of Aunty Ida, our grandfather Bulloch’s younger sister. She was considered ‘peculiar' in her day but seemed to suffer some form of autism which ran from generation to generation in the Bulloch family. In the photo from 1916, she appears to be a handsome woman. I visited her in Banger in 1947, but she was not there. The grass in front of her home was three feet high and looking into the living room through the window, we could see a massive duffel bag suspended from a chandelier and about thirty cats bouncing off and on the furniture onto the duffel bag. What a show and something I have never forgotten.
Here is a photo of grandmother and grandfather Bulloch in 1930, when father had emigrated to Canada. It is evident from this picture that our grandmother was about three inches taller than our grandfather. She was six feet tall.
,Here is a beautiful photo of our dear Aunt Bertha with her grandmother Devon, her mother's mother. Pictures of their grandmother in her early 20s showed her to be a “knock-down” beauty. So many of the Devon descendants had the bigness of great-grandfather Devon and the fine features of his wife.
Our aunt Bertha was the only girl of the seven Bulloch children and the family slave since her parents could not afford maids. She was much loved. Wonderful family photos, and each photo a story in itself.
