When we picked up Kelly at three months of age, she pushed up from her crib and gave us a million-dollar smile. It was a moment we have never forgotten. We named her Martha after the famous Martha Bulloch, who was the mother of Theodore Roosevelt, and a distant relative. In her later years, Martha became Kelly Devon.
It was in 1967, when Kelly was three years of age, that we all went to Ireland for nine weeks. We stayed with my Uncle Alex in Belfast for four weeks and then toured the north and south for another five. In this magical photo, we have Kelly at the side of a lake on the west coast of Ireland.
Kelly seemed to be so serious about everything. When we gave her a toy watch, she would look at it with serious intent at least once an hour. And when we gave her a toy hair dryer, she went through the process of drying her hair for a least thirty minutes a day, just as her mother did.
Kelly was easy to raise. She was agreeable, accommodating, and to our great joy, loved her food and ate anything put before her.
A wonderful moment in Kelly’s life was graduating with honours from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute, which has since become a full-fledged university. She received a Degree in Business Administration. In the photo, I am wearing a formal graduation gown, normally worn by staff only. Because I was a former staff member, I was able to sit up on the platform with my colleagues and present Kelly’s graduation certificate. It was a moment to remember.
Kelly has two children. Paul, who is attending North Eastern University in Boston working towards a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and Katie, who is enrolled in NYU in general arts with plans to transfer into Business.
The photograph of Paul and Katie was taken at our sixtieth wedding anniversary held at the Westin Bristol Airport Hotel in 2015. A magical performance on the flute and violin performed by Kelly and Katie can be seen at www.johnandmarybulloch.com.
Finally, I must mention all the pets we had over the years for Kelly. They included every kind of animal life–birds, cats, dogs, weasels, fish and whatever. She loved them all. Here is a recent family photo with her two dogs, Jack and Charlie.
